Transitional Kindergarten FAQs
What is Transitional Kindergarten?
Holy Angels’ Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program is designed for children who do not meet HA’s September 1st cut off date or may benefit another year of emotional/social growth.
What is the difference between TK and K?
TK has a much smaller class size, curriculum is taught at a more individualized pace, and children are given time to grow socially and emotionally helping them increase self -confidence and self-efficacy.
If my child is placed in TK, does that mean he/she is held back?
Not at all! Our goal at Holy Angels is to place each child in the grade that will help them thrive physically, socially, emotionally, and academically. We look at the whole child and consider which class will help the child succeed to become competent and confident learners.
If my child is in Pre-K, will he/she be in TK or K the following year?
Placement will depend on the child’s assessment and social and emotional readiness. Our goal is to place children in a class that will help them grow physically, socially, emotionally, and academically (aka whole child).
What do children do in TK?
Our curriculum mirrors the Kindergarten curriculum. It is taught at an individualized pace with a smaller class size. The first half of the day consists of the major subjects-Math and Language Arts. The second half of the day consists of co-curricular subjects- Science, Social Studies, Religion, and Art.
Do children nap in TK?
Students do not nap in TK but we do have a “lay down” period after lunch where they lay down and listen to relaxing classical music for about 15-20 minutes.
Is TK a half day or full day program?
Our TK is a full day program (8:00am-3:00pm, Wednesdays, 8:00am-2:00pm).
Will there be homework?
Students will have homework nightly, depending on the curriculum taught in class. Homework is reinforcement of what students learn in class.
Homework will include written work, such as printing, number and alphabet recognition, and math and work to do with you, including learning the monthly prayer, reading readiness, sight words and memorization skills to practice.
*Students should be read to every night for about 20 minutes. *
What if I do not want my child in TK?
As educators and professionals, we will have a discussion with you (the parents)before finalizing any decision. Our goal is to work with you and be partners in your child’s education and success. Our recommendations for your child's placement are based on informal and formal assessments that are done daily in the classroom as well as the K entrance assessment. Our ultimate goal is to place a child in an environment that will allow them to grow and be successful in the classroom.
